Although Huntley is included in two counties, the Village Board has adopted the regulations of the McHenry County Open Burning Ordinance to cover ALL property within the Village. Due to the relatively small size of residential lots in Huntley, leaf burning is now essentially illegal for the vast majority of homeowners within Village limits.

The Village of Huntley does not pick up Christmas Trees. Contact your Wastehauler for pick up information.

The Village employs a full-time Village Manager who is responsible for the daily operations of the Village. and has the responsibility of implementing Village Board policy. In addition, the Village Manager is responsible for assuring that municipal services are provided to the community.

The nearest driver’s license facility is located in Woodstock at 428 S. Eastwood Street (Rt. 47). Contact the Secretary of State Office at 815-338-2750 for more information.

The Huntley Fire Protection District encompasses approximately 55 square miles and provides services to all Village residents. 

The Village does not require a permit to have a garage sale. However garage sale signs are only allowed to be posted on private property.

The Village utilizes a single village-wide residential wastehauler.  Pick-up day is Monday.  The Village-wide service is provided by MDC Environmental (except for apartments & Sun City). Commercial entities must contract for services with a wastehauler licensed to do business in the Village.

Huntley is a home rule municipality. The Village is governed by an elected President (Mayor) and a six (6) member Board of Trustees. The Village President and Board of Trustees are elected at-large to four (4) year, staggered terms.

The Huntley Area Public Library, located 11000 Ruth Road, provides a wide range of traditional library services as well as digital services including e-book, music and magazine downloads, online classes, language learning, tutoring and resume help, and programs and special events for all ages. The Hampshire Township portion of the Village is served by the Ella Johnson Memorial Public Library, 847-683-4490; www.ellajohnsonlibrary.org at 109 S. State Street; Hampshire.

The Village will replace damaged mailboxes with standard issue boxes provided that the original mailbox was placed in compliance with Village Regulations and was actually hit by the plow truck.  If your box or post was damaged, please contact Public Works at 847-515-5222 to report the damage.  Two replacement options are available: 

1. The Village will replace your box, post, or both, depending on the damage, with a standard product.  This consists of a standard metal mailbox and wooden 4’x4’ post.  You do have the option to have a more expensive model installed by the Village, but you must pay any cost above the $45.00 maximum allotted by the Village.  This $45.00 consists of $25.00 for the mailbox and $20.00 for the post.   If you decide to purchase your own mailbox and have the Village install it, you must call the Public Works Administration Department at 847-515-5222 to set up an appointment. 
2. You may replace the box yourself and allow the Village to reimburse you for the cost of the replacement.  With this option you must, again, stay within the $45.00 allotted by the Village ($25.00 for the mailbox and $20.00 for the post).  You can also install a more expensive mailbox and post, but you will be reimbursed a maximum of $45.00.  Remember to follow the installation requirements if you install your own mailbox.

*Note: Residents can come to the police station after hours and have an officer meet them by using the phone in the lobby.

Overnight parking on all Village streets is prohibited from 2 A.M. to 6 A.M. Permission can be obtained for special circumstances by completing an online request.

The parkway tree replacement program allows a cost share between residents and the Village to replace residential parkway trees that were inspected and found to be hazardous, sick or dead.  Residential property owners request that their parkway tree be inspected and if the tree meets the criteria of this program then an order form is sent to the resident.  Typically a selection of three to five trees is offered for planting. 

The Village of Huntley does not require pet licensing. However, both Kane and McHenry Counties do require valid rabies  tags for all dogs in the County.  Typically, when you take your pet to the veterinarian for rabies vaccination, the veterinarian's office will have all the paperwork and information on obtaining the rabies tags from McHenry or Kane County.  You can also find more information on tags at the appropriate County websites below.

Huntley's corporate limits encompass 14.64 square miles of land area, with a 2016 Special Census population of 26,632 residents.

The Village does not require a real estate transfer stamp.

Throughout the winter season, Village Public Works personnel conduct a coordinated effort to provide continuous safe travel by keeping the Village transportation network clear of snow and ice. In that regard, snow and ice removal is considered emergency work in that transportation routes must be cleared at any time of the day or night to provide for the safe transportation of people and goods, especially emergency services such as rescue, police, and fire.  Please click on the link below for complete information regarding snow and ice removal.

The Village does not require village stickers.

 The Village follows a color coded, four-tiered water conservation program (red, yellow, orange and green) to help residents quickly identify the status of the community water system. Signs are posted throughout the Village displaying the color and water restriction conditions. Hand watering is permitted for watering of flowers, plants, car washing, etc. For more information about the restrictions, contact Public Works and Engineering at 847-515-5222.

The Village-wide wastehauler, MCD Environmental, picks up yard waste (grass clippings and leaves in Kraft bags or specially marked cans) from April 1st - November 30th.  Twice a year the Village has a “Branch Pick-up” program.
