Sewer Maintenance

Sewer Televising & LiningThe Village provides separate sewers for sanitary sewer flow and storm sewer flow.  The sanitary sewer system is designed to convey all normal flow.  However, even though the sewer systems are separate, stormwater during rain events does enter into the sanitary sewer mains and can overload the sewers.  This surcharging during severe rains can result in the backup of sewage into basements at some locations in the Village.

The Village has established a Backup Control Policy to define general guidelines and procedures to be followed for the approval and implementation of backup control measures.  This program is limited to the cost of plumbing improvements as a preventive measure for sanitary sewer backup problems that result from a rain event and does NOT include payment for damages that might have occurred with a sanitary sewer backup.  Prior approval must be obtained from the Village to participate in this program and to be eligible for some reimbursement of plumbing costs.

Maintenance of Sewer Service:   In the Village of Huntley, the property owner is responsible for all maintenance and repair of the building sewer from the building to the connection with the public sewer main. This includes the portion of the building sewer pipe that is located under the street. The Village provides all maintenance and repairs of all public sewer mains for our residents, but each property owner is responsible for the maintenance of their own individual building sewer service lateral.

Prohibited Connections:   The use of the Village sanitary sewer is strictly limited to the disposal of normal household waste and sanitary sewer flows. No property in the Village may connect rain gutters, sump pump discharges, footing drains, or other similar storm sewer connections into any sanitary sewer.

Sewer Backup:   The Department of Public Works strives to keep the sanitary sewer mains and sewer pumping stations in good working condition to provide reliable service to our customers. Despite our best efforts, however, it is not always possible to eliminate all problems or to prevent all sanitary sewer backup problems. Sewer backups in buildings can occur if there is a blockage or obstruction in the building sewer, which is beyond the Village's control. Unexpected problems such as tree roots, a sudden failure of pipe, an accumulation of grease or other debris in the sewer can cause a problem at any time. Follow these guidelines to help prevent sewer backups.

Between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, please contact the Department of Public Works at 847-515-5222 to report any problems with your building sewer. For emergency problems outside of normal office hours, call the Huntley Police Department non-emergency number at 847-515-5311.

If you experience a sanitary sewer problem, a staff member will be dispatched to your location to check the Village sewer main. If it is determined that the blockage or problem is located within the building sewer, we will recommend that you contact a plumber for cleaning or repair of the service line. If it is determined that the problem is in the Village's public sewer, the Village will begin work to correct the problem as quickly as possible.
